Before, After & Beyond — Martino Gamper

This October an energising retrospective of designer Martino Gamper can be found on a quiet residential street, inside a transformed London townhouse. Co-curated with Sarah Douglas, the domestic setting immerses you within Gamper’s characterful practice that overlaps the realms of art, craft and design.

As you enter the house, you are invited to freely explore the different rooms. Each space is staged to surround the visitor with Gamper’s furnishings and products, giving a unique experience of intimately being with – rather than merely observing – his full range of work. Gamper is interested in the relationships we have with the things we live with, and is motivated by a desire to connect people, and the social dimensions of furniture.

The brilliant variations of his archive go from the beautiful and composed to the ugly and the imperfect. From experiments (‘100 Chairs in 100 Days’) to museum projects and industrial products, Gamper’s work shows objects with personalities that are different, transformative, and utterly special in their own way.
