A Shop to Visit — Jerks, Hackney Road

Our favourite vintage T-shirt dealer has a new shop on Hackney Road. We visit Jerks and consider why the clothes that say the most are often those that have already lived a life.

Jerks has been around for some time — rumbling quietly underground as a trusted resource for designers, stylists, and the curious, in search of vintage counterculture T-shirts. Founder Matt Sloane began trading T-shirts from his bedroom floor, overtime this grew into an appointment-only space in South East London, and now, a new home on Hackney Road, stocked with pieces that are only available in-store.

Part of the appeal of a vintage T-shirt is that it’s both an expression of the self and a form of public self-description. Its age lends it an appealing ambiguity: did you see the band play? Inherit it? Find it years later? Worn through a city, it signals something that most people will pass without noticing. But sometimes someone catches the reference, and shares a fragment of their own history, or simply smiles in recognition. For a moment, the anonymity of the street gives way to a small, sweet moment of connection.

The strange consequence of having access to almost everything is that everything has begun to look the same. Clothing is available everywhere and in overwhelming quantities, while the culture around it feels increasingly flattened. In this context, to choose something already in existence — singular, imperfect and acquired with thought — feels both more sustainable and more personal. It is a small act of refusal, perhaps, but also the kind of quiet revolution we need.
